Everything you need to know about provident insurance
What is a provident insurance contract?
A provident insurance contract (contrat prévoyance) is a policy designed to guarantee the financial protection of the insured and/or their loved ones in case of serious events, and may cover (depending on the contract):
- the payment of an annuity or capital to the designated loved ones, in case of death de l’assuré ;
- financing their funeral ;
- compensation of the insured in case of disability following a serious illness or accident in life ;
- payment of an annuity in case of loss of autonomy or long-term care needs.
Depending on the situation, a provident contract can serve as a salary supplement, an aid to estate transmission, or financial support for loved ones during always-difficult moments in life.
What is the difference between provident insurance and health insurance (mutuelle)?
Top-up health insurance (health insurance (mutuelle)) reimburses your everyday healthcare expenses (consultations, medication, hospitalisations), while provident insurance (prévoyance) financially protects you in case of serious life accidents: death, disability, incapacity to work or loss of autonomy. These two policies are complementary but address different needs.
Who can subscribe to provident insurance?
Any adult can subscribe to a provident insurance policy, whether employed, self-employed, a civil servant or not professionally active. Age conditions and coverage offered vary by insurer and contract. Certain high-risk professions may be subject to specific conditions.
Is provident insurance mandatory?
For private-sector employees, group provident insurance (subscribed by the employer) has been mandatory since 2016 for managers (cadres). For non-managers, it depends on the applicable collective agreement. Individual provident insurance, however, remains optional but strongly recommended to supplement group coverage, which is often insufficient.
Can you combine several provident insurance contracts?
Yes, you can combine group provident insurance (subscribed by your employer) with individual provident insurance. This strengthens your protection and increases the capital or annuities paid in case of a claim. Be careful, however, of any coordination clauses between contracts that may limit cumulative compensation.
Is provident insurance tax-deductible?
The choice of coverage depends on your personal and family situation:
- If you have children or a home loan: prioritise a death benefit with sufficient capital
- If you are self-employed: opt for robust incapacity/disability coverage
- As you grow older: consider long-term care coverage
Don’t hesitate to call on a broker to help define your real needs.
Can you combine several provident insurance contracts?
Individual provident insurance premiums may be deductible from your taxable income within certain limits, particularly for self-employed workers (TNS). For employees, group provident insurance premiums are generally deductible from taxable income. Check with your assureur or your tax adviser for your specific situation.
