Exotic pet insurance (NAC) — In France the exotic pet ranges cover exactly five species : rabbit, ferret, chinchilla, guinea pig and parrot. Everything else — reptiles, hamsters, rats, mice, gerbils, and most birds — has no veterinary fee policy at all. Reimbursement runs up to 85 %, with an annual limit of 400 € or 800 € depending on the species. Prialys, an independent broker, sets out species by species what genuinely exists.

Documents for your exotic-pet insurance

Which exotic pets can be insured in France?

Five species : the rabbit, the ferret, the chinchilla, the guinea pig and the parrot. That list is the same across the insurers distributing an exotic pet range.

How much is reimbursed?

Up to 85 % of the veterinary fees actually incurred, within an annual limit of 800 € for the rabbit, the ferret and the parrot, and 400 € for the chinchilla and the guinea pig, after a 50 € annual excess.

Are reptiles covered?

No. No French insurer offers a veterinary fee policy for tortoises, lizards or snakes. Protection goes through your home policy for liability, theft and equipment.

Why are the subscription age limits so tight?

Because the ranges are built around young animals with no history. The window closes at 2 years for the ferret and the chinchilla, and at 3 years for the rabbit and the guinea pig. Only the parrot has a wide window, up to 10 years.

Can a single policy cover several exotic pets?

No. Each animal has its own policy. Grouping them with the same insurer simplifies administration, and a commercial discount can sometimes be negotiated, but it is not published or guaranteed.

What is systematically excluded?

Conditions existing before subscription, care given during the waiting period, husbandry-related problems regarded as avoidable, elective procedures, food and housing. The general terms and conditions list the exclusions in full.

FAQ – Exotic Pet Insurance (NAC)

    Why so few species?

Insurers need a large enough population, a predictable life expectancy and reliable veterinary data to price a risk. Only five exotic species meet those conditions in France. For the others, the absence of an offer is a pricing problem, not an oversight.

What can be done for a species that is not covered?

Two things remain useful. First, the personal liability section of your home policy covers damage caused by the animal to a third party. Second, contents cover can protect the equipment and, subject to a declared value, the animal itself against theft. Veterinary costs, however, stay with you.
