Rodent insurance — Not every rodent can be insured in France. Only the guinea pig and the chinchilla appear in the exotic pet ranges, with reimbursement of up to 85 % and an annual limit of 400 €. The hamster, the rat, the mouse, the gerbil and the degu are not eligible : no French insurer covers them. Prialys, an independent broker, tells you plainly where your rodent stands.

Documents for your rodent insurance

Can any rodent be insured in France?

No. Only the guinea pig and the chinchilla appear in the exotic pet ranges. The hamster, the rat, the mouse, the gerbil and the degu are not covered by any French insurer.

How much is reimbursed for a guinea pig or a chinchilla?

Up to 85 % of the veterinary fees actually incurred, within an annual limit of 400 €, after deduction of a 50 € annual excess.

Up to what age can cover be taken out?

From 3 months to 3 years for a guinea pig, and from 3 months to 2 years for a chinchilla. After that no new policy is accepted.

Is there a prevention allowance?

No. Unlike the rabbit, the ferret and the parrot, these two species come without a prevention allowance : routine care stays at your expense.

Why is the hamster excluded?

Mainly because of its very short life expectancy and the low average value of care, which leaves insurers without a workable actuarial basis.

What is excluded?

Pre-existing conditions, care during the waiting period, husbandry-related problems regarded as avoidable, food, bedding and cages. The general terms and conditions list the exclusions in full.

    FAQ – Rodent Insurance

    Which rodents can be insured?

Only the guinea pig and the chinchilla, at 85 % reimbursement with a 400 € annual limit and a 50 € excess. The limit is half that of the rabbit, which reflects the lower average cost of care rather than a weaker level of cover.

And if my rodent is not eligible?

For a hamster, a rat, a mouse, a gerbil or a degu, no veterinary fee policy exists. The realistic answer is a small dedicated savings fund, plus knowing in advance which local practice takes exotic pets. Damage caused by the animal to a third party remains covered by the personal liability section of your home policy.
